Thank you for your interest in the Transit Village Initiative and Transit Village designation. For a municipality to be considered for designation, all the requirements must be addressed, and this form must be completed and returned to the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT). The Transit Village Task Force will determine if all the requirements have been satisfactorily addressed. They are as follows:

1. Attend a pre-application meeting with the NJDOT Transit Village coordinator and Transit Village representatives as well as municipal representatives.
2. Identify existing transit that serves the municipality and the proposed Transit Village District.
3. Demonstrate municipal willingness to grow around the transit facility in a transit-supportive manner.
4. Adopt a transit-oriented development (TOD) redevelopment plan and/or TOD zoning ordinance which includes a residential component.
5. Identify individual sites where TOD projects have been approved in recent years or are currently in the development application process.
6. Identify bicycle and pedestrian improvements within 1/2 mile of the transit facility.
7. Identify placemaking projects within 1/2 mile of the transit facility.

New Jersey municipalities with a Transit Village designation will be eligible to apply to the Division of Local Aid and Economic Development’s Transit Village Grant program for non-traditional transportation-related projects. The projects are awarded on a competitive basis. While funding is not guaranteed, once designated, a municipality is eligible for technical assistance and priority consideration from many of the agencies that make up the Task Force.
